Cosmetology Taps Into Halloween Spirit to Prepare for Open House

The Students' Creations Will Be Displayed at CTE's Open House on Oct. 10

Images of Krueger are everywhere, but the struggle was finding a believable way to recreate his signature disfigured skin.

“I’m using liquid latex paint,” said McGuirk, a senior from Hastings. “And these wrinkles are made out of crumpled up paper towels.”

It’s that level of creativity that will be on display for Cosmetology students when their parents attend Open House at the Center for Career Services campus on Thursday, Oct. 10. For more than a decade, instructor Theresa Galitello, a self-professed Halloween lover, has challenged her students to design Halloween-themed makeup designs and nail sets for use on mannequins.

“This forces them to use their creativity,” Galitello said.

Students find a design that inspires them and then attempt to recreate it using the skills they’ve learned in Cosmetology. The project often forces them to problem-solve in order to succeed, but that can lead to some challenging moments.

“A lot of them really enjoy it — when it’s over,” Galitello said. “It can be difficult, but when they see the final product they are usually happy with what they produced.”

The roughly two dozen second-year students in Cosmetology will have their creations on display for more than Thursday night’s Open House. Students throughout campus will have the opportunity to drop by the classroom and cast a vote for their favorite design via QR code. There will be first, second and third-place prizes and those selected will be rewarded with gift baskets.

This year’s designs included colorful hair, dark makeup, missing eyes and sinister-looking expressions. Galitello expects the end result will be popular with the parents who visit campus for Open House.

“The mannequins are always the stars of the show,” she said.

The Center for Career Services will host its annual Open House from 6-8:30 p.m. on Thursday.
