Guest Speakers
Students in the Security Law and Police program at Southern Westchester BOCES recently had the opportunity to engage with professionals from the FBI and the Greenburgh Police Department. This visit offered valuable insights into policing and federal investigations.
The FBI agents shared their diverse experiences, discussing roles from criminal investigations to counterterrorism, and emphasized the importance of teamwork, integrity, and ongoing training. Their real-life case stories captivated the students and highlighted the complexities of federal law enforcement.
Following the FBI, representatives from the Greenburgh Police Department spoke about their daily responsibilities and the significance of community engagement. They shared personal anecdotes that illustrated the challenges and rewards of serving the public.
Students actively participated by asking questions, leading to discussions about career paths, necessary skills, and ethics in law enforcement. The professionals provided guidance on preparing for careers in this field, including education, physical fitness, and networking.
The visit concluded with a networking session, allowing students to connect directly with the agents and officers for advice and relationship-building.

Workplace Tours
Students from the Sound Production program at Southern Westchester BOCES recently toured Alchemy Post Sound in Peekskill. The students explored the Emmy award-winning studio, gaining firsthand insights into the world of post-production and the art of foley.
During the visit, they observed the process of creating sound effects for film and television, learned about various aspects of the industry, and engaged with professionals.
Ymonni Thomas a senior from Woodlands Senior High School remarked, We had the chance to watch a scene being acted out, and the sound really makes it believable." Aurora Johnson a senior from Alexander Hamilton High School added, "This was my second time touring the studio. During my first visit, I felt overwhelmed with information, but this year, I understood so much more."
This workplace tour provided students with valuable experiences that enhanced their understanding of potential career paths in sound production. Overall, the workplace tour was an invaluable experience for students pursuing careers as audio engineers and sound artists.
Nursing Assistant and Computer Information Systems & Medical Administrative Assistant students from Southern Westchester BOCES recently had the opportunity to tour Montefiore Einstein’s Advanced Care facility after expressing interest in pursuing careers as radiology and ultrasound technicians.
During the visit, students explored various departments and learned about the essential role these technicians play in patient care and diagnostics. They interacted with professionals in the field, gaining insights into the daily responsibilities and advanced technologies used in radiology and ultrasound procedures.
The experience provided exposure and motivation as they prepare for their future careers in healthcare. Paulina Oliveros a senior from New Rochelle High School shared her enthusiasm for learning about MRI machines and nuclear medicine during her recent experience. She expressed, "I really enjoyed discovering how MRI machines work. You can start your career by learning to operate them, and then continue your education to increase your skills and earning potential by working with additional machines."
This workplace tour not only deepened their understanding of these career paths but also inspired them to consider the diverse opportunities available in the healthcare industry.
Job Shadowing
Cosmetology students are enhancing their learning experience through 12 hours of job shadowing at local salons this semester. This hands-on opportunity allows them to observe professional hairstylists, nail technicians and estheticians, thus gaining valuable insights into the daily operations of the beauty industry. By immersing themselves in real-world salon environments, student are learning various techniques and the importance of customer interactions.
During their job shadowing, students observe a range of services, from haircuts and color treatments to skin care and nail care. This exposure enriches their technical skills and highlights the significance of effective communication and building client relationships. Additionally, students have the opportunity to ask questions and interact with experienced cosmetologists, receiving invaluable mentorship on best practices and industry trends.
