PROGRAM DESCRIPTION - BARBERING

Barber iconStudents enrolling in the program will learn the basics and fundamentals of barbering. The course is a two year program with a minimum of 500 classroom hours needed in order to be eligible to take the New York State Board of Education Master Barbers License exam. In that time, students will have academic and hands-on or practical lessons in the classroom. Students will get training in all the most up to date techniques, while building a solid foundation for a promising career in the future.

 

Course available: Grades 11 - 12

Course length: 2 years

Credits: 7 CTE elective credits; 1.0 English

PROGRAM CONTENT

UNITS OF STUDY:

Students will learn a wide range of important skills necessary for having a successful career in the field of barbering including but not limited to: 

  • Basic men’s haircutting and styling
  • Shaving and facial massages
  • Hair coloring
  • Skin and scalp treatments
  • Safety and infection control techniques
  • Retail sales and marketing
  • Barber shop business practices
  • Professionalism, and
  • Proper work ethic and client relation skills.

 

 

 

COLLEGE CREDITS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Upon successful completion of this program, students may receive college credits pending established procedures.  Students may also receive an industry certification pending successful completion of an industry certification exam.  All students completing this program and passing the appropriate industry certification exam will receive an endorsed high school diploma.  Please see below for college credits and industry certifications available.

INDUSTRY CERTIFICATIONS:

  • New York State Master Barber License (upon passing NYS exam)

 ARTICUALTION AGREEMENTS:

  • The College of Westchester: 3 - 6 credits
