Taking a seat as a student member on the Southern Westchester BOCES Board of Education seemed like a natural fit for Nathan McCusker. He has long been involved in student government at Rye Neck High School, serving this year as the senior class treasurer.

“I enjoy meeting with people,” he said. “I enjoy discussing topics and solving problems that need to be solved. I like to have my voice heard because I can speak for others and speak for myself about things that need to be changed."

Nathan will attempt to make an impact through his role with the board this school year, one of three students serving in that capacity. He’s currently enrolled in the Culinary Arts program at the Center for Career Services and plans to advocate for the program, including new technology in the kitchen.

Nathan said he also places high value on the chance to learn from his interactions with board trustees and district administrators.

“I think it’s a great life skill. I’ve talked to so many people, and what I can say is I learn the most from people who have experience and know what they are talking about,” he said. “These people on the board, they’ve been involved in their careers for a while. They are amazing at what they do and have so much to offer and are willing to teach us. This will help me with communication, public speaking, and working with others. And I can try and help our school community at the same time.”
