Commercial Art, Architecture and Design students showcase their work at annual Media Show

The annual event provides an opportunity for students to showcase their work as part of the CTE campus's annual Media Show.

“The Media Show is the only time of the school year when we get to come together as a community of teachers and students and see what we've achieved throughout the course of the year, says Architecture and Design teacher Christine Ireland. “I always love when my students say, ‘Mrs. I, I don't know if I want to display this piece, my work now is so much better!’  It's so wonderful when they realize how far they can go when they put in the work, and it's everything to me when I’m reminded that I got to be a part of that.”

Senior Alex Anderson echoes Mrs. Ireland’s sentiments after seeing his renderings displayed on the wall. “When I see it come together at the end of the project, I feel so proud knowing all the hard work that went into it,” said Alex, who will be attending Buffalo University in the Fall. “I really enjoy it, it’s my passion.”

Alex plans to get a master’s degree in architecture and eventually work in the field.  student displays artwork

For senior Liana DeIliPaoli, who will be attending Marywood University, it’s the details that matter most. “I really like to draw, but I also like building 3D models because I enjoy working with my hands on the little details, said Liana.

Samantha Suqui, a senior in the program, also focuses on the details when creating her architectural sketches. “I love to draw and go into detail with my sketches because it helps me plan what I want to build,” Samantha said.

While architecture and design interests Samantha, her true passion is in education, and she plans to study early childhood psychology at Mercy College upon graduation.

Just beyond the sketches and models were large displays of graphics, designs, and portraits made by students in teacher Damian Powers’ Commercial Art program. One piece stood out among the many colorful creations: a black and white image of a girl donning a beautiful, beaded blouse, while looking down in a seemingly stoic manner. Created by senior Sofia Sanchez, the larger-than-life portrait is one of her favorites. “I like drawing people and bodies, and my focus has always been realism, said Sofia. “Seeing my work on display and knowing that I did it is very special to me.”

In fact, Mr. Powers’ students are no strangers to having their work on display for all to see. Earlier this year, several students in the Commercial Art program featured their creations at the White Plains Library and the Katonah Museum of Art’s annual “Young Artists” exhibit.

They get to showcase their art while receiving compliments from their friends and faculty because they really created some great work.”
